Why won't my boat lift raise evenly?

Uneven lifting means one side is carrying more load than the other: a stretched or corroded cable, a slipping drum, a failing gearbox, or a lift piling that has moved. Running a lift that racks under load damages the cradle and the boat, so stop using it until it is checked.

Why won't my boat lift raise evenly?

The racking itself is usually the symptom, not the cause; finding which specific component has failed on the affected side is what an assessment actually does before any repair is scoped.

A lift that racks intermittently — fine most of the time, uneven under a heavier load or at certain tide states — points toward a different set of causes than one that's consistently off on the same side, which is why describing exactly when and how the unevenness shows up is useful information on the first call.

The common failure points on a tidal-creek lift

Cables are the most common failure point on a brackish-water lift, followed by drums, gearboxes, and the electrical connections that control them. All four sit in continuous salt air, and all four degrade faster here than the same components would inland.

A cable failure is the one that matters most, because it fails without much warning and takes the cradle — and often the boat — down with it. Visible fraying, rust bleed at a termination, or a cable that's developed a kink are all reasons to stop using a lift immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled service.

Cable and hardware corrosion in brackish water

Galvanic corrosion at cable terminations and other dissimilar-metal connections is a constant presence in brackish water, and it typically progresses from the inside of a fitting outward — meaning the visible rust bleed on the outside of a termination usually understates how much section loss has already happened inside it.

This is why cable retirement on this coast runs on a shorter interval than a manufacturer's inland guidance suggests, and why a visual check alone isn't sufficient — cables near the end of their service life are inspected under load, not just looked at.

Motor housings and switch boxes see the same corrosion pressure as cables, just less visibly, since they're usually enclosed. A motor that's started drawing more current than usual, or a switch that's grown sticky, is often showing an early corrosion symptom before it fails outright.

When the lift pilings are the real problem

Sometimes the lift itself is sound and the problem is what it's mounted to. A lift piling that has lost fixity in the mud, or shifted out of plumb, throws the whole system out of alignment no matter how well the cradle, cables, and motor are maintained.

This shows up as a lift that racks in the same direction every time, rather than intermittently, and it's a piling-and-foundation problem before it's a mechanical one — repairing the lift hardware without addressing a moved piling just repeats the failure.

Repair versus replacement

Most lift failures are component repairs — a cable, a motor, a gearbox — rather than whole-unit replacement. Replacement becomes the better call when the lift's own structure has corroded or fatigued, or when it's undersized for a boat that's grown heavier than the lift it's mounted on.

We repair to the failure, not past it — replacing a cable doesn't mean replacing a sound motor, and a sound lift on a moved piling gets a piling repair, not a new lift.
