Lift capacity is sized to the boat's dry weight plus fuel, water, gear, and a safety margin — not to its advertised weight. On a large tidal range the lift's travel matters as much as its capacity, because the boat has to clear the mud at dead low and the dock at high.

What size boat lift do I need?
A loaded center-console with a full fuel tank, a T-top, and a season's worth of gear routinely runs 15–20% heavier than its dry weight. We weigh the boat as it's actually used, not as it left the factory, before specifying a lift.
It's also worth sizing for the boat an owner expects to own in a few years, not only the current one — a lift installed at the edge of a current boat's weight class often ends up undersized the first time it's upgraded, which is a more expensive problem to fix after the fact than to plan for up front.
Capacity, travel, and why tidal range changes the answer
Capacity is only half the sizing question here — travel, the vertical distance the lift can raise a boat, matters just as much on a coast with a large tidal range. A lift that clears the mud at dead low and the dock at high tide needs more travel than the same boat would need on a lake.
Undersized travel shows up as a hull that still touches bottom on a spring low tide, or a boat that can't be raised clear of wave action during a blow. We check the site's actual tidal range against the lift's rated travel before quoting a model, not after.
Lift types and where each one suits this coast
Cradle lifts suit most private docks here and handle a wide range of hull types; elevator (piling) lifts work well where dock structure is limited; floating lifts ride the tide themselves and suit locations where dedicated pilings aren't practical. Which one fits depends on the dock, the hull, and the bottom.
A four-piling elevator lift is the common choice on a fixed dock with room for its own dedicated pilings, since it isolates lift loads from the dock structure itself. Where a dock can't take four new pilings, a cradle lift mounted to the existing structure is often the better fit, provided the framing underneath can actually carry it.
What the existing dock and pilings have to carry
A lift adds significant point loads to whatever it's mounted on, and an older dock built for foot traffic and a mooring line was not necessarily designed to carry one. Before a lift goes in, the framing and pilings it will bear on need to be checked against the loads it will add.
This is where a lift installation and a dock inspection become the same job. Pilings that are marginal for the dock alone can fail once a lift and a loaded boat are added; reinforcing or adding dedicated pilings up front costs less than a lift that racks the frame within a season.
Power, wiring, and corrosion protection
Lift motors, switches, and wiring run in a brackish, corrosive, outdoor environment every day of their service life, and standard residential-grade electrical components fail fast here. Marine-rated wiring, weatherproof switch gear, and a properly bonded ground are the baseline, not an upgrade.
Corrosion at cable terminations and motor housings is the most common brackish-water lift failure we see, and it's largely preventable with the right hardware from the start — galvanic isolation between dissimilar metals, and a service interval that catches corrosion before it reaches a cable under load.
Does a boat lift need a permit in South Carolina?
Yes — a boat lift is reviewed by SCDES as an addition to the dock it's mounted on. A lift added to an existing, previously permitted dock generally qualifies under the state's general permit for dock additions; a lift installed as part of new dock construction is reviewed as part of that dock's own permit.
General Permit GP-03-001 specifically covers mooring piles and related hardware added to an existing, grandfathered, or previously permitted dock, with a modest fee and no public-notice process — considerably faster than a new individual permit. State regulation also requires a lift to be open-sided with no enclosure, and limits catwalk access to the lift to 3 feet wide.
Installation sequence and access
Lift installation on an existing dock typically runs a few days: setting dedicated pilings if the design calls for them, mounting the cradle or elevator hardware, and running and terminating the electrical. Timing is set by tide access for the piling work, same as any other marine construction.
Where the lift is going in alongside new dock construction, it's sequenced as the last structural piece, mounted once the dock itself is complete and can bear the load.
